DOVER ATHLETIC'S GREATEST HITS - Volume 2                      Volume 1 still available

NOW AVAILABLE on Double DVD-R and VHS Video

£11.95

Over 2 hours of the ups and downs of following Dover Athletic.

There's no doubt about it, following any football team can be a trying task, but it always seems that following a team like Dover takes some beating.

Whilst not everything in this latest compilation you will want to remember, it is aimed to reflect the experience of being a Dover Athletic supporter.

Whilst there were a number of compatibility issues with the DVD version of Volume 1, this time around I believe that the DVD-R version will be much better.

Another Bad Day At The Office

The 2003/04 season. Ok so it was another one of those seasons to forget, but it wasn’t all bad. Granted you won’t appreciate the two penalty misses against Chippenham, or reliving that awful day at Canvey Island, but you simply can’t forget our usual friendly encounters with Worcester City, some superb performances such as the 3-1 defeat of Welling and the 2-1 win against Conference side Forest Green Rovers in the FA Trophy. Take a 40-minute journey through a disappointing yet intriguing 2003/04 season and perhaps this time around it won’t seem quite that bad.

The Hoverspeed Trophy

A new trophy heralded the reviving of a pre-season tradition of playing our southerly neighbours Calais Racing Union FC. The first leg taking place at Dover prior to the 2003/04 season, with the second leg a year later in France. Watch out for a stunning performance from Paul Hyde in the 2nd leg which earns him Man Of The Match. Highlights of both matches plus the Calais Supporters v Dover Supporters trophy.

Stevenage Borough v Dover Athletic

A memorable game at old rivals Stevenage Borough in The Whites second season in the GM Vauxhall Conference.

Meet the managers

A selection of Dover’s past managers as seen through the eyes of Meridian TV.

Two intriguing matches from the 2000/01 season.

Dover v Northwich Victoria. Watch out for a Niall Quinn sending off and stunning goal from Lee McRobert.

Dover v Dagenham & Redbridge. 4 goals, a player sent off, a manager sent off, a penalty missed. A fiery encounter.

Local Rivals

Highlights from some of the earliest footage of Dover Athletic during 1990  and 1991. Three encounters against Gravesend & Northfleet.

There’s only one Hydey!

Love him or hate him, you can't deny he has been a loyal servant to The Whites over recent years. This feature is a tribute to Paul Hyde at Dover Athletic. Some superb saves and some controversial moments that typified this lager than life keeper.

More from the Beazer Homes Championship winning season of 1992/93.

Matches against Moor Green, Corby and Chelmsford feature this time around.

Dover on the Telly!

The Wire TV production of live midweek football comes to Crabble with Dover v Merthyr Tydfil.

Four Goal Hero!

Jimmy Strouts scores all four goals as Dover overcome Northwich Victoria.

New Beginnings

Dover v Kidderminster Harriers. Dover's very first game in the Football Conference.

Save DAFC

This was used to promote Dover’s plight during their Conference season of 2001/02 which ended in relegation. It almost ended in the club’s demise altogether. Music by Elton John.

Memorable matches
Welling v Dover Athletic - FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round Replay
This was part of Dover's FA Cup run of 2002. It is often a mistake that teams believe the hard work has been done by bringing a team back to their home ground for a cup replay. Dover's away form during the 2002/03 season would depict that Welling's best chance of a win had gone 3-days earlier at Crabble, and so it proved. A number of incidents and a corker of a goal from Nicky Dent, which eventually was voted runner-up for Goal Of The Season 2002/03.

Goalkeeping Howlers

Charlie Mitten - Ok, so not strictly Dover, but what Dover fan could leave out a fumble by an ex-Dover keeper playing for Margate. Charlie Mitten playing against Northwich Victoria in January 2003.
Paul Hyde - This compilation features many great saves by Paul Hyde, but every goalkeeper is allowed a mistake and it simply wouldn't be right to exclude his howler against Crawley during August 2003.

Matches from the vault
Dover v Gravesend - 1990 Kent Senior Cup Final -Some of the earliest footage of Dover I could find. The Kent Senior Cup win against Gravesend in 1990 played at Gillingham. (How Priestfield has changed)
Dover v Stevenage Borough - November 1994 -When Dover appeared on television during the 1994/95 season. The cable channel WireTV covered many Conference matches during their brief existence, and they managed to come to Crabble a few times. On this particular occasion, Dover were up against old rivals Stevenage Borough. Watch out for what looks like a certain 2003 board member making V-signs at what seems to be the cameras!
Dover v Woking - February 1996 -Games against Woking appear many times on this compilation although I make no apology for this since they have normally been memorable occasions, full of incidents and goals.

Memorable matches
Crawley v Dover - September 2002 - Crawley were tipped as the pre-season favourites to lift the Dr.Martens Premier Division title although Dover had already dented their hopes at Crabble a month earlier by beating them 2-1. With many players out injured, manager Clive Walker was forced to play players out of position in an effort to somehow steal a point or two. As it turned out, despite a weakened line-up, it was Dover defenders who played a major part at both ends of the pitch to secure an emphatic win.

Memorable matches
Dover v Maidenhead - October 2003 - F.A.Cup 2nd Qualifying Round - With such a successful previous FA Cup run, Dover were looking to try to emulate that achievement. It would start with a tricky encounter against Ryman Premier Division opposition in the form of Maidenhead. It had been some 3 years or so since Dover had scored more than 3 goals in a league or FA Cup/Trophy game, but with some great goals Dover finally exceeded the 3-goal barrier.

A Musical Compilation
"Frustration" - November 2003 - This probably summed up Dover's season up to November 2003. Clips and goals from the season up to early November with music courtesy of "James" - "Born of Frustration"

Memorable Matches
Tamworth v Dover - March 2003 - An explosive encounter. A game in which, having not been defeated for a number of months, Tamworth found being on the wrong end of a scoreline at home difficult to stomach.

The Best Bits from "A Bad Day At The Office"
The 2001/02 Season - Some of the few memorable moments from a turbulent season where Dover nearly went out of business and were relegated from the Football Conference.
Dover v Hayes - Goals a plenty in a 3-2 win which was relatively incident free compared to the return game some months later.
Dover v Boston United - Runaway leaders Boston United were expected to breeze past bottom club Dover Athletic. On paper, that's how it should have been….. however, games are played on football pitches and not paper. A fascinating game with a real sting in the very final minute, which sent the Dover fans into raptures.
Margate v Dover - A Boxing Day encounter between bitter rivals and a first game in charge for ex-Everton and Wales keeper Neville Southall. Memorable for Dover fans for the score rather than the game itself. A win is a win however, and who cares when it is against Margate!
Hayes v Dover - Despite the Hayes 2-1 victory, a truly astonishing match brim full of incidents. I really only took the camera to this game on the off chance I might get some half-decent footage. It turned out to be one of the most unbelievable matches I have ever filmed. Four sendings-off, complete mayhem at times, two genuine goals disallowed, a forearm smash on a Dover player which received merely a yellow card…… oh, and there were three goals. Mild bad language on the soundtrack due to camera position.
Dover v Farnborough - Pretty mild stuff compared with Hayes v Dover but another game with a sting in the tail that sent the Dover fans into raptures.

Memorable matches
Dover v Folkestone Invicta - Boxing Day 2002
On a mudbath of a Crabble pitch, a fascinating league encounter between two closest of neighbours. Another game where the referee would benefit from eyes in the back of his head as penalty appeals were turned down, and players squared up to each other in some very personal battles.

What Happenned Next?
Some odd and strange moments from down the years.

A Classic
Dover v Rushden & Diamonds
- 2000/01 season - Another game that on paper was a mere formality for a Rushden side that had cost a few million. Following Dover's last encounter with Rushden at Crabble, their manager Brian Talbot had publicly stated that they had "put Dover in their place" after they had beaten the Whites. It was revenge time and how sweet it turned out to be. To ram Talbots words straight down his throat was in such a convincing manner was more than anyone at Dover could wish for.

A Musical Compilation
"Days Like These" - Charting the 2nd part of the 2002/03 season to music courtesy of "Asia".

Champions
More archive footage, this time from the promotion season of 1993/94.
Dover v Hastings Town - December 1992 - Well I had to include this one didn't I? Also it was when I was actually following Hastings and of course I recognise many of the players. My old friend Tony Burt doing the toss-up, No.10 Dean White, (Dad of ex-Dover player Ben), who is now reserve manager at Brighton, and the very observant long-time Dover fans will spot an ex-Dover player celebrating the Hastings goal.
Dover v Dorchester Town - February 1993 - Included for a truly astonishing goal by a certain Nicky Dent. Watch out for it!
The presentation of the Champions Shield.

Memorable matches
Dover v Worcester City - May 2003 - An end of season stroll around the pitch? Not on your nellie. A game full of incident and a referee who gets the wrong man.

More memorable Woking matches
Dover v Woking - August 1993 - Football Conference - The new boys give a Conference thrashing to Woking.
Woking v Dover - October 2002 - FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round Replay - A first round proper tie at home to Oxford awaited the winners and Dr.Martens oufit Dover were the underdogs to Conference club Woking having drawn 1-1 three days earlier at Crabble. The most downloaded set of highlights ever on doverathleticvideo.com says it all about this game and will live in any Dover fan's fondest memories forever.

A Musical Compilation

"It's a Beautiful Day" - November 2002 - I thought of using this piece of music by "U2" as an accompaniment to some clips a long time before it was used on the ITV Premiership signature tune. I decided to use it anyway since it fitted in so well with the way things were going for Dover at the time.

QUALITY OF OLDER FOOTAGE: Some of the footage on this video is quite old and technology in days past was not quite what it is like in the 21st century. I have done my best to enhance it, but nonetheless sound and vision varies on some of the older footage. Do not adjust your set.

 ITop Of Pagenformation
As you may or may not know, I have been videoing Dover Athletic's matches for a number of years now and the video service that I offer has continued to grow throughout those years. I am always seeking new ways of enhancing this service and it has progressed relatively quickly from where it started using old analogue footage. With the number of affordable DVD players on the market, the natural progression was to move to providing video on this type of media.
Unfortunately, the money and knowledge required to viewing DVDs is relatively small in comparison to creating this type of media and I have spent many hours becoming completely stressed out with all my various bits of equipment in order to produce Dover's first DVD.
Undaunted by this I persevered, and at last I am able to provide what I hope you will see as a presentable package on DVD.
As with all new projects, there are always some teething troubles and you should be aware that producing DVDs with all the variations involved is a very technical process, hence the Technical bits below.

Technical bits
  • The DVD has been produced using DVD-R, which is compatible with most DVD players.
  • On some systems the Menu may not work as intended although you should be able to enter the Chapter numbers directly. Refer to the "order of Appearance" contained in the accompanying booklet for chapter numbers.
  • QUALITY OF OLDER FOOTAGE: Some of the footage on this DVD is quite old and has been derived from old videotape. Technology in days past was not quite what it is like in the 21st century. I have done my best to enhance it, but nonetheless sound and vision varies quite considerably on some of the older footage. There is nothing wrong with the DVD or your player, and do not adjust your set.
